Light a candle for someone’s recovery
Light a candle for someone who is ill — for yourself, or for someone you are worried about — and it takes a permanent place on a public wall of candles. You can send them the link, so they know somebody did this. The wall holds 1,000,000 candles and is then sealed in time.
Should I tell them, or not?
Both happen. Some people send the link straight away — it feels different from a plain message, because you had to stop and actually do something. Others light it and tell no one, and that is enough on its own.
⚠️ If you do send it, think about the name. The wall is public, and someone’s illness is their business, not the internet’s. A first name or initials is often the kinder choice, and it means exactly as much.
What happens after you light it?
It appears on the wall immediately and keeps its place. It does not burn out after a day and there is no monthly fee keeping it alight — a candle here stays until the wall is sealed at a million, and after that we intend to preserve it in the Internet Archive.
You get a permanent link, also printed on the receipt that arrives by email.
What if they get better — or they don’t?
The candle stays either way. People come back to it long after the reason for lighting it has changed, and quite a few of them light a second one for the other thing that happened. Nothing about it needs updating and nothing expires.

- Light a candle for someone and send them the link — For a bad week, or just because — something that took more than typing a message.
